Islamic History: Grade 9

You’ll develop the cultural awareness and critical thinking skills you need to analyze and produce a broad range of discourse in a full spectrum of careers — and to make a difference in whatever you do.

Overview

Year 3 of the JBJ Academy Islamic History track. One unit: Baghdad and the Golden Age (750–1258) — eighteen lessons, one every two weeks over a 36-week year.

From the Abbasid revolution and the founding of Baghdad to the Mongol sack of the city in 1258 — the Mihnah, the House of Wisdom, the Muslim scholars who shaped medicine, mathematics and astronomy, the Four Imams and the compilation of the Sunnah, al-Andalus and Cordoba, the Fatimids, the Seljuks and the Nizamiyya, and the Crusades read from the Muslim chronicles.

Note on credit: Grade 9 is the first credit-bearing year, and this course is tagged History & Social Science rather than Elective.

Cross-course coordination

Two of these lessons overlap the Science curriculum’s Islamic Scientific Legacy strand. Coordinate the two so the same scholars are not covered twice in the same year.
